The beach is home of Poseidonia: a marine plant of high importance for the sea and its shores. Poseidonia is part of protected species by national and international standards. Posidonia is typical of the Mediterranean sea and its presence testifies to the high environmental quality of the area.
Walking along the beach, especially after a storm, you may encounter the Posidonia Oceanica which, contrary to what you think, is not an alga, but a precious plant with a diversified structure, exactly like terrestrial plants, with roots, leaves, flowers and fruits. These plants develop in grasslands that colonize sandy bottoms up to 30-40 meters depth.
The more resistant fibers of the leaves are compacted by the waves and returned to the beach in the form of egagropolis or sea potatoes (better known in Alghero as "buric").
Why is Posidonia so important for the ecosystem?
- It releases up to 20 liters of oxygen per day for each square meter of vegetation;
- It represents a safe and food-rich place for many fish (including the seahorse), therefore it is a splendid place for snorkelling;
- It prevents coastal erosion through the piles of leaves accumulated on the beach (called banquettes) that protect the coast. This plant therefore allows to save every year meters of beach that would otherwise disappear;
