Along the streets of Alguer

This itinerary will make you discover the long history of Alghero, dominated in 6000 years by the Phoenicians, Romans and Spaniards who have greatly influenced the city so much so that Alghero is nicknamed Barceloneta. Walking through the cobbled streets of the old town you can experience the Catalan soul of the city through the names of streets including the urban and architectural details of churches and ancient buildings, starting from Plaza Civica, the core of the historic centre of Alghero. You can admire the Palazzo Guillot Catalan style while crossing via Carlo Alberto with the blind arches and the mullioned Aragonese windows in the upper part, the church of San Francesco of the XIV, rebuilt following a collapse, beside a Gothic Aragonese architecture typical of the Italian Renaissance and the church of San Michele, patron saint of the city. The former church of Our Lady of the Rosary is a must see, currently headquarter of the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art with a valuable collection of paintings, silverware and marbles, including Palazzo Carcassona and Palazo Machin, surprising for the harmony of its decorations between the Catalan Gothic style and the renaissance. The historical centre of Alghero is also the most exclusive and typical for shopping in the artisan jewellery coral shops and Prêt-à-porter shops of the best-known brands.
